Generation No. 1
James1 Gibbs was born in 1797 somewhere in North Carolina. He migrated to Warren County (parent county of Grundy), Tennessee with the Hill wagons in 1804-1806 with his family. Others in this migrant party were from Buncombe County, NC, making that county a likely point of origin for James1 and his parents. Two other Gibbses in Warren County, TN at that time are possibly brothers of James1 (they were also born in NC). It has been suggested that he came to Warren County from NC with the Nunley, Fult, Martin and Lynn groups (who were all "Mountain Men"). When Grundy County split from Warren County, James1 Gibbs was the only Gibbs living in Grundy; the rest were left in Warren. James1 Gibbs and George Gibbs signed the petition to make Grundy County along with Ezekiel Gibbs, John Gibbs and Isaac Gibbs.Generations No. 2 & 3
Children of James1 Gibbs and Hannah ___?___ were all born in Grundy Co., TN and are:
i. George2 W. Gibbs, born 1822. He married Margaret or Mary (possibly Faulkner) and had two children.
Margaret (or Mary) died about 1850 and George2 W. Gibbs married (2nd) Cynthia Nunley, ca. 1855
in Grundy Co., TN. George2 and Cynthia had one child in Grundy Co. before moving to Denton Co., TX
in 1857/8, where they had six more children.
ii. James2 Gibbs, born in 1823. He married __?__ and had James3 Gibbs, born ca. 1868 (married Lucy Argo
20 Sept 1889 in Grundy Co.)
iii. Vincent2 Gibbs, born in 1827. He married Mary "Polly" ___?___ and had James3 (1860), Robert3 (1869),
Thomas3 (1872), John3 (1878), and Benjamin3 (1878). Vincent stayed in Grundy Co., and some of his
descendents are there today.
iv. John2 Gibbs, born in 1832. He migrated to Carroll Co., Arkansas before 1880.
v. William2 T. Gibbs, born in 1833. He married Mary Ellen Martin, 5 Aug 1859, in Grundy Co.; No children;
he died in Grundy Co., TN
vi. Polly2 Gibbs, born in 1837
vii. Nancy2 Gibbs, born in 1838.
viii. Mary2 Gibbs, born in 1839.
