THE GIBBS SURNAME DNA PROJECT
How To Participate

Who can participate . . .

There are only two qualifications for participation in this project. The first is obvious; you must have the Gibbs (or one of its variants*) surname. The second qualification requires some explaining; since the Gibbs Surname DNA Project is based on testing of the non-recombinant Y-DNA found only in men, you must be a male, or must have a male blood-relative of your Gibbs line who is willing to be tested for you, in order to participate.

How to join . . .

If you meet these two qualifications, the process for joining the project is simple. Go to the FamilyTreeDNA web page for this project, read the information there and if you decide to join just fill out the order form. Since you will be participating in an existing surname project, you will be able to order the test of your choice; the 25-marker test (Y-DNA25), or the 37-marker test (Y-DNA37), or any of the others listed at the prices shown.

Non-participants may become participants at the group price we get from FTDNA, which is $169 for the Y-DNA25 test plus $2 for shipping. We believe this is the lowest price for this test anywhere. Other tests are also offered from this page, and you may want to take advantage of the group rates posted for them.

When your order has been received by FamilyTreeDNA, you will receive a confirmation from them by email. Your test kit will be sent to you with instructions for its use, along with return mail packaging. After you complete the test, slip your sample into the return mail packaging, seal it and drop it in the mail. Your kit will be processed and you should have the results in four to six weeks.

The test is done by analyzing DNA taken from dead skin cells obtained through self-administered, painless scrapings of your inner cheeks to determine your precise genetic signature. (For a complete explanation of this process visit FamilyTreeDNA.com FAQ page.)

Your privacy . . .

Under the terms of the Group Rate testing you are allowing the Gibbs Surname DNA Project Administrator to see the results of your test. This is solely for the purpose of comparing your results with the those for other members of the surname project. No one else will have access to your results without your knowledge and permission. For a more detailed explanation, see our Privacy Policy. Also see the FamilyTreeDNA Privacy Policy.
