Basic Information for Jesse Gibbs
Born: before 1765 in Vermont, Eastern Upstate New York, or Connecticut
Died: 1821 in Bristol, Morgan County, Ohio

Generation 1 Notes:

Jesse Gibbs first appears as a grantee of donation lands via the Donation Tract of the Ohio Company
Purchase in 1797 in the old Northwest Territory. The only potential trace of him prior to this is a Pay Roll
for a Jesse Gibbs that was a volunteer solider at Fort Pitt in 1791. Given the unique given-surname
combination for a Gibbs in this part of the country during that timeframe, it's likely that solider was the
same Jesse Gibbs.

Jesse Gibbs first settled on his 100 acre donation tract in the late 1790's, which was located in Waterford
Township, Washington County, Ohio. He was a yeoman. He was also a little suit-happy, as he has a few
civil suits found in Washington County's Court of Common Pleas records. He married Sarah. Her maiden
name is unknown, however one of her children's middle names was provide as Nickolson, which could
possibly be her maiden name. The marriage doesn't appear to have occurred in Ohio. It seems it likely
occurred in western Pennsylvania or West Virginia around 1799.

In 1816 he sold his 100 acre tract and took 162.42 acres of land in the Ohio River Survey in present Bristol,
Morgan County, Ohio, and relocated there. He acquired this land via federal land patent through the General
Land Office. He appears to have died in 1821. He is listed on the voter lists, in June 1821 in Bristol, and his
wife is found remarrying a Benjamin Wells Talbott in November 1821. Sarah Gibbs Talbott had one known
surviving child to B.W. Talbott, Nancy Talbott, whom married James Craig Wells and relocated to Missouri.

The 162 acre tract of Jesse Gibbs descended to Jesse's five children via Ohio intestacy law since he left
no will or administration. All five children, Elizabeth2, William2, Charles2, Jesse Jr.2, and Levi2, sold their
32 acre portions to Benjamin Wells separately. Charles2 and Jesse Jr.2 backtracked on the pioneer trail,
and settled in Allegheny and Washington County, Pennsylvania respectively in the 1820's and 1830's.

Generation 2 Notes:

CHARLES2 NICKOLSON GIBBS was born circa 1806 in Waterford Township, Washington County, Ohio,
and died 15 November 1882 in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

CHARLES2 migrated to Mifflin Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania around 1825. He married
EMILINE JANE HARDEN "EMILY" HAYS
circa 1827. Emily was the daughter of Jacob Hays and Jane
Scott Harden, whom were members of the well known pioneer Hays family of the greater Pittsburgh
area. CHARLES2 was a wealthy millwright in the area, living on Streets Run. He was a millwright of flour.

Emily was Presbyterian, the same as her parents, and attended Lebanon Presbyterian Church in
Mifflin Township, and is buried in the Lebanon Presbyterian Cemetery next to her parents in the plot
of her oldest son, ISRAEL3 GIBBS. CHARLES'2 religion at this time remains unconfirmed, but is
suspected to have been Methodist. CHARLES2 and Emily's children were either Presbyterian, or
Methodist. CHARLES'2 burial place is unknown, but is suspected to be Franklin Cemetery in Munhall,
which was the principle burying ground for Methodists in that area. Burial records at Lebanon
Presbyterian Cemetery go back to the time when CHARLES2 died, and there is no record of him being
buried there. Franklin Cemetery has no burial records unfortunately, but CHARLES'2 daughter JANE3
HAYS GIBBS BURKHART
was Methodist, and was buried in Franklin Cemetery per her obituary.

male descendants.
